Virginia Medicare Advice

We offer Medicare Supplemental and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans for Virginia seniors from Anthem. Here are three points that will help you regarding your Medicare benefits and Medicare coverage in Virginia.

    1. Learn When and How to Apply for Social Security benefits

The Social Security Administration suggests that you apply for benefits three months before you want coverage to begin. You will most likely get a letter in the mail from the Social Security Administration stating your coverage information, but you should still visit the official Social Security Administration website at www.ssa.gov for detailed information and to get the application forms.

    2. Learn About Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for Americans age 65 or older, or for those who qualify beacause of a disability. Medicare is designed to help cover medical costs, but it does not cover all healthcare expenses. You can learn more about Medicare from the Medicare website www.medicare.gov or by calling 1-800 MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. Medicare representatives are available 24 hours a day to answer your questions about Medicare.

Medicare has different parts that serve unique functions:

      • Medicare Part A: Once eligible, you will be automatically enrolled in inpatient hospital, home health care, skilled nursing facility care, and hospice care.
      • Medicare Part B: Optional, offers coverage for outpatient hospital, physician, laboratory, limited preventative care, and other services not covered by Medicare Part A (like physical and occupational therapy and home health care).
      • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Offers the same services as Medicare Part A and B but with additional preventative care and optional prescription drug coverage. Medicare Part C is offered by private insurers such as Anthem
      • Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage and is offered by private insurers such as Anthem.

  1. Learn about Medicare Supplemental / Prescription Drug Coverage plans

Medicare Supplemental plans are additional insurance plans sold by companies such as Anthem. When combined with Medicare, these plans are designed to reduce your out-of-pocket costs for most Medicare-covered services. Medicare Supplemental plans are also called "Medigap" insurance. Anthem offers several Medicare Supplemental plans in Virginia, including “Plan A”, “Plan F”, “High-deductible Plan F”, “Plan G”, and “Plan N”, each with different benefits and premiums.

Anthem offers Blue Medicare Rx as a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage Plan for generic and brand name drugs and access to a large network of pharmacies. You may choose from one of three plans designed to meet your needs and your budget.
